Rhodiola: the anti-depressant plant that gives you energy

Rhodiola ( Rhodiola rosea , golden root or Arctic root) is an adaptogen plant that grows in the cold regions of the world (Arctic, mountainous areas all over the world: Central Asia, Europe (Alps, Pyrenees), Scandinavia, Iceland, Great Britain Britain and Ireland).

For supplementation are root extracts that are used.

What it’s for

Rhodiola is used to increase energy and a sense of vitality, physical strength as well as mental capacity. Being adaptogenic, it helps to resist/adapt to physical, chemical or emotional stress without disturbing the normal functioning of the body.
It is also used to increase athletic performance, combat fatigue, decrease recovery time after intense exercise and even improve sexual function. Regulates heartbeat and improves memory.

Much sought after also for its antidepressant, anxiolytic and immunostimulating effects.
Rhodiola extracts appear to protect cells from external damage and interfere with neurotransmitter production and ATP (energy) production.

There is not much published scientific evidence on the subject, but some studies are being carried out and, even recently, a publication considered rhodiola extracts to be safe and effective in terms of daily stress. Rhodiola has been used for centuries, having been mentioned for the first time in a book by the Greek author Pedânio Dioscórides who investigated drugs.

How it is taken

Doses of 50 mg may already have some effect and, if you prefer, you can start with that dosage. You can also start supplementation with 100mg once a day for 1 week and increase by 100mg each week until you are taking a maximum of 400mg a day. It should be taken in the morning and supplemented for a maximum of 4 weeks.
Choose supplements that contain the most effective glycosides, rosavin and salidroside.

Precautions

Rhodiola taken orally for up to 4 weeks is safe. There are no known side effects , nor are there long-term studies done. Excitement, insomnia or irritability may arise, as with other adaptogens. If this happens, you should stop supplementation.
In pregnancy and lactation, due to lack of information, its use is not recommended.

Rhodiola is an adaptogen plant indicated for situations that are very common in today’s stressful times: fatigue, lack of concentration, reduced brain performance, low energy and slightly depressive behaviours/thoughts.
